First ride of the season

The first official mountain bike trail is open in Minnesota. I took the dogs to work and then met up with Pete Ryan afterwards for a few laps. The trails were in great shape with only one twenty foot section that was still muddy. Now if the temps would just warm up a bit more so it didn’t feel so much like fall out there.

Was able to use my remote trigger for my camera. Still need to work out some kinks but I’m looking to taking a lot of self portrait riding shots this year.

Afterwards we caught up with Chris Druckenmiller for a few beers in the parking lot.

Midwest Freeride Community

Introducing a new regional organization for DH and Freeriders. The Midwest Freeride Community exists to “provide the resources, event development, and communication infrastructure necessary to unite and progress the Downhill and Freeride Mountain Bike scene throughout the Midwest.”  The group is the brainchild of local freeride advocates Adam Buck and Tony Benusa.  It has also been helped out with web design by Kris Yahner, film submissions from Alex Horner and photography by Ben Berndt and yours truly.

I know I am personally looking forward to trying to get out and cover the local scene more than I have in the past as it is a great group of guys and a really good time.  Heck maybe even this year I’ll learn how to properly put a little air between my wheels and the ground!

Winona Cherry Bomb - 2000

Continuing on with the blast from the past mountain bike videos archives here is a clip from the Winona Cherry Bomb back in the summer of 2000. Oh what beer, lack of riding everyday, and a slowing metabolism has done to my body :D

Flashback to 1998

I think for most this might be a headache waiting to happen but back in 1998 my college cycling club made some mountain bike videos. My friend Preston dug them out of the abyss and mailed the VHS tapes to me awhile back and today I finally got around to hooking up my ancient VCR to my computer and uploading them to the internet.

PugFest 2008

On Sunday Laura and I drove up to Hillside Park in Elk River to photograph PugFest 2008. The race put on by Rich Omdahl, the city of Elk River, and a handful of local sponsors was quite the success. The weather warmed up making for a great day to be out on the snow covered trails.

Over 75 riders turned out to race including 19 of those riding Surly Pugsleys. I took a bunch of photos and I’ll post up a few here. To see the rest visit my flickr account here.

Morbid

My friend Pete Ryan started a social club of sorts called Morbid (Minnesota Off Road Bikers into Drinking). Sounded like the perfect fit for me. He recently had some stickers printed up and when I saw three blank pint glasses at Goodwill, well it seemed like just the reason to set up the light box.

Old Highway 8

After having a few drinks the night before I was half tempted to just stay in my nice warm bed this morning but I got up the courage and got my gear together to shoot some of our local riders hitting a local dirt jump spot. Even though I was only able to be there for a short while I’m glad I did as the turn out was great and I had fun shooting my first ever dirt jumping. I’m looking forward to hitting up this location again especially because it is right near one of my favorite brew pubs. Not to mention I’d like to fine tune my skills at shooting this stuff :)

Thanks for the good times guys!
